On Writing [Longer]

Just so everybody knows — just so Drew knows (as far as I know my friend Drew is the only one who reads this, and Google Reader tells me there are two subscriptions to this blog, so I assume it is indeed Drew) — I do intend on writing longer essayish posts about things that I think matter; I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

But I will.

I hope.

A few before grad school starts is my goal.

So keep a look out, and subscribe to the RSS feed if you use a reader.  And if you don’t use a reader — what the hell?

Brilliant video. Good song too.

While I’m posting about obscure animators… The above is another film from a different animator, Jeff Chiba Stearns. There are times we all feel his ‘sticky-note-to-do’ pain. I know it well. There are some particularly powerful moments in this one as well.

Also, as an aside, I wish I could draw worth a damn.

Ryan Larkin:

Four decades ago, filmmaker Ryan Larkin produced some of the most influential animations of his generation. Years later, plagued by alcoholism and drug abuse, he was destitute on the streets of Toronto.

This is really beautiful stuff. I am sorry I didn’t know about it before Larkin died. I suspect it is the case with most animators that they toil in relative anonymity (but don’t we all?); even the academy award winning ones.

In Rainbows

I have to say I was never a huge fan of Radiohead. Not because I didn’t like the music, but more because I had never been exposed, or exposed myself to it.  Well, my friend Dave, a long time fan, has been having something of a Radiohead renaissance lately which was kicked off by a few solid weeks of nonstop talk about the new album ‘In Rainbows.’ [click that link to listen at last.fm]

It took me awhile, but I finally got around to grabbing the album.  I’m hooked. Everything about it, from the variety of sounds on the album and jaw dropping percussive elements to the beautifully integrated guitar licks and stunning poetry, will make you fall in love with Radiohead.

Now I feel the need to fully give myself the exposure to albums like Kid A, Amnesiac, and OK Computer that I never had before.  And, I understand why Dave wouldn’t stop talking about the album. All of his talk was fueled a little something called obsession — which I now share.

edit: Pitchfork Media has an apt review of the album.

Favre and the gnashing of teeth...

Funny that my last post (months ago) was a quote about Brett Favre.  At that time I was confident that he was done for good, and I laughed at the analysts on ESPN who said he would feel the itch to play come time for training camp.  I think any fan of Brett Favre who saw his tearful performance at his ‘goodbye press conference’ would have assumed he was gone for good. I was wrong.  I am an idiot. Guess that’s why I’m not an analyst on ESPN?

Anyway, Favre wants to play. The Packers have moved on. I am sad. As long as he doesn’t end up with the Vikings I will be okay.  If that happens I’ll quit football cold-turkey.  Tampa Bay or somewhere like that?  Meh, I can deal.

The whole ordeal really leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth though.

Favre wouldn’t let us define him, and for that he stands as tall as anyone has ever stood in this or any game. He played the game on his terms and he leaves it the same way. In the process he made the NFL better, he made football better, and he made all of us better. There’s nothing left to say except, “Thanks, pardner. We’ll miss you.
